The image of Jesus face imprinted on Veronica's handkerchief became an icon of salvation. The light covering action of the Holy Handkerchief and the Corona Mask was translated into a heavy screen hanging without a face. The presence of the image, as a tangible expression of the embodiment in the flesh was transformed into tar, a physical and fleshy substance but also opaque and toxic.
